Alaska Vol 1 - 3
Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater up 2,360 feet to the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series of VHS videos and now Pentrex is proud to bring these programs to you on DVD, beginning with Volume 1: Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad. Where Trains Fly and Eagles Soar - Seward and Whittier Subdivisions on the Alaska Railroad The Alaska Railroad series continues with a fascinating look at operations on the Seward and Whittier Subdivisions during the summer of 1994. We'll treat you to a 3-day tour of the lines between Anchorage, Whittier and Seward, trackage that runs past the incredibly scenic vistas of Turnagain Arm and Kenai Fjords National Park. The route from Seward to Portage takes the trains over the crest of Kenai at 1,060 feet, up 3 percent grades, and through 5 tunnels!

A Salute to the Warbonnet BNSF
A tribute to the best loved paint scheme in America, the classic red and silver Santa Fe "warbonnet" passenger paint scheme, resurected in 1989 and applied to freight locomotives for fast intermodal service. We take a look at this spectacular paint scheme in current service at many favorite railfan locations on Cajon Pass, Tehachapi Pass, and the Mojave and Seligman Subs, and give you a brief history of the warbonnet paint and it's reintroduction in 1989, and look at the types of locomotives wearing it. 2 Hrs WARB

Big Steam's Last Stand
Winter on Jingpeng Pass China's Jitong Railway is the last big steam hauled main line in the world, with double headed QJ 2-10-2's taking trains over Jingpeng Pass. We visited Jingpeng Pass in Mongolia in February, 2003 to take in the sights and sounds of big steam working hard, and what a trip it was. We visted the shops at Shenyang to see QJ's being overhauled, the sheds and shops at Deban (it's like travelling back in time 50 years) then watched the action over Jingpeng Pass, visited the CTC room at Shangdian, watched servicing at Jingpeng and had a cab ride over the pass. What an experience being on the second engine working hard upgrade through a tunnel! Awesome big steam action! 2 hours JING
Cajon Pass Cab Ride
Join us for a March, 1998 legal cab ride over California's Cajon Pass on board BNSF C44-9W #1018, on train ZLACMEM. The BN-ATSF merger is young, and most of the power seen is warbonnet or bluebonnet. The view is straight ahead with some roving camera shots, and you'll hear radio chatter and conversation in the cab. A student engineer is running the train, conversation includes advice on train handling. 1 hour 55 mins. CPCR
Crawford Hill
This was a spur of the moment trip before Chris went off to RIT in the Fall of '95. Started badly with the plane from Boston breaking its rubber band, then it's not real scenic between Scott's Bluff and Crawford so I thought the trip was going to be a bust. Not so, the Crawford Horseshoes are just awesome, and there was plenty of traffic. Lots of SD7OMAC's and enough older power to keep things interesting. Even saw the "Trough Train," which is just amazing. 2 Hours HBCH
Crawford Hill Revisited
Join us for a return visit to BNSF's Nebraska helper district, where heavy coal trains struggle up the 1.55% grade over Pine Ridge and through Crawford Hill's famous twin horseshoe curves. Lots of sound and fury as sets of SD70MAC's assault the grade aided by sets of SD60M helpers. You'll also see older power on manifests and intermodals, including former Santa Fe "warbonnets" and Cascade Green SD40-2's. Awesome action and heavy duty railroading through deep cuts, around horseshoe curves and up steep grades! 2 Hours CRAW
Canadian National's Yellowhead Route
CN on the Albreda and Edison subs over Yellowhead Pass between Hinton, Alberta and Tete Jaune, British Columbia in June, 1999. You'll see CN's unusual power, EMD & GE cowls together with new SD75I's and C44-9W's. The Canadian, the best looking passenger train around, and its baby sister, the Skeena, make appearances, as does the Rocky Mountaineer. Lots of CN action in superb scenery. 90 minutes YELO
Canadian Pacific Heart of the Rockies
This video was awarded the "Canadian Rockies Railroad Museum Award for Outstanding Achievement in Railroad Video". Canadian Pacific in the heart of Canada's spectacular Rocky Mountains, between Field, BC and Exshaw, AB. Stunning scenery, snow covered mountains in some superb weather. In addition to CP's action red SD90MAC's and AC44CW's, we caught a rare CN diversion train, the Rocky Mountaineer an CP's beautiful restored F units on a publicity run of the Royal canadian pacific. We take a look at the Spiral Tunnels, and one of the most spectacular railfan locations on the continent, Morant's Curve. 2 Hours ROCK
Canadian Pacific's Mountain Sub-Roger Pass
The descriptions for the scenery that CP's Mountain Sub runs through are all inadeqate. The sub runs from Golden to Revelstoke, British Columbia, through some of the most stunning scenery on the continent. Lots of snow on the mountains, AC4400's, SD90MAC's and tired SD40-2's provide the action. All the famous locations, Field, Ottertail, Leanchoil, Palliser, Glenogle, Donald, Beavermouth, Rogers, Mount MacDonald tunnel, Stoney Creek (a long hike in!), Connaught tunnel, Mount Shaughnessy tunnel, Ross Creek, Illecillewaet, Albert Canyon and lots more. CP's newest power in magnificent surroundings in June, 1999. I'm proud of this one. 2 Hours ROGR
Canadian Pacific's Shuswap Sub
Canadian Pacific's Shuswap Sub runs from Revelstoke, British Columbia to Kamloops, through lush forests and alongside sparkling lakes. the line runs through eagle pass in the Monashee Mountains, past historic Craigellachie of last spike fame, through the Notch Hill Loop, alongside Shuswap lake and down the valley of the North Thompson River. Action red locomotives in the spectacular scenery of beautiful British Columbia. 1 hour 50 minutes SHUS
Curtis Hill
Curtis Hill, Oklahoma is still a major bottleneck on BNSF's former Santa Fe transcon between Chicago and Los Angeles. The east slope of the hill was double tracked in 1995, the west side is currently being double tracked, but there is still the single track over the Cimarron River. Curtis Hill is also the location of the longest continuous curve on the former Santa Fe between Chicago & LA. Loads of action, with fleeted trains, lots of different power. Taped in May, 2004. 90 minutes CURT
East to Green River
Union Pacific's busy transcon main line between Weber Canyon, Utah and Green River, Wyoming. The SD70ACe's are out and about, and we caught the Western Pacific unit leading. Lots of C44-ACTE's are also out and about, on all kinds of trains. Bright winter conditions and some light snow and heavy UP action. 90 mins ETGR Fullscreen
Flags Flares and Wings
UP's newest power working hard across the Southwest in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Scenic highlights include Steins Mountain, the Dragoon Mountain, the Maricopa Mountains, the Salton Sea and San Timeteo Canyon on Beaumont Hill. I've always liked SD70M's, but with the flaired radiators and the "Building America" flag paint, I think they are really handsome engines. See and hear them flying across the desert and lugging up grades. 2 Hours FLAG
Guilford on the B and M
A re release of one of our very first programs, unavailable for a number of years. Re edited, with some never before seen footage, Guilford on the B&M is perhaps a misnomer, as the program includes a chase north of Portland with GP35's. You'll see Bluebird GP9's and GP40's, shabby ex Santa Fe SD26's in gray and orange, high hood SD45's, MBTA F units and Bud cars, U28B's and U33C's. Lost of action at Lawrence, MA & East Deerfield. Taped mostly in 1988 and 1989 with very early equipment, the quality is obviously not as good as from our latest high definition cameras. A blast from the past! Originally sold at $39.95! 1 hour 40 minutes GBAM
Highball over Cajon
Another tape on Cajon? Yes indeed. I'd never been and the railroads involved have merged. Because of El Nino everything was green, I had bright blue skies (no smog!) and there was snow on the mountains. Combined with hard working trains and power in a rainbow of paint schemes, models from GP9's through SD751's and C44-9W's pIus leased units, LOTS of SD45's (would you believe 7 in one lash-up?) and GP60M's, all working hard or whining downgrade, what more could you ask for? Lots of action at Blue Cut, Sullivan's Curve, Mormon Rocks, Alray, Terrace Cut, Summit and Frost. Check our the mergers and the scenic splendors of Cajon Pass, you'll be glad you did, this one is GOOD! 90 Min CAJN
Highball over Cajon 2
Highball over Cajon 1 was very well received, the only complaint being it wasn’t long enough! Here, to address that complaint is two hours of Cajon, Part 2! Taped in Spring 2001 and Fall 2005, there’s lots of variety icluding older units from 2001, a couple of units in the new BNSF Railway paint, and an SD70ACe, not to mention several brand new SD90MAC’s (pre wings). Blue Cut, Sullivans Curve, Mormon Rocks, Alray, The Hill, Silverwood, Summit and Frost. Loads of action, including a number of meets, and a 3 train meet on the hill, lots of different paint! 2 Hours HOC2
Highball over Stevens Pass
A July, 2000 chase of 4449, with 4449 tucked in behind it! Taped between Gold Bar and Trinidad Loop we go from rain forest to desert, via the Columbia River. Power goes from BN green SD40's through War Bonnets and Oakway to Heritage 2 to a black SP steam engine. Wild! Pine trees and steep grades in the mountains, stunning scenery (I just sat and looked) in the Columbia River gorge, and Trinidad Loop, all in sunshine for a change. My first look at big steam, most impressive. 90 Min STEV
Highball over Tehachapi
Pre merger SP and SF on this world famous location in December 1995. The loop is impressive, we had a very nice morning sitting in the sunshine on the hillside overlooking the loops, a long Santa Fe pig train draped around the loop has to be one of the most spectacular sights available. We got in to Cable, Bealville, Tunnels 1 & 2, hiked into tunnel 5, got old power, new power, sunset shots, dawn shots and all in all had a pretty good time. the best thing to my mind was the oil cans, now, sadly, no longer running over Tehachapi. The sight and sound of the loads struggling up the grade with B units is just awesome, ground shaking! We covered the line from Mojave to Caliente. 2 Hours HBOT
Hot Spots 6 Gary IN
Pine Junction in Gary, Indiana is our #6 hot spot, and what a hot day of railfanning we had, with 75 trains in just over 12 hours, has to be our best day yet! CSX, NS and the EJ&E all come together at Pine, plus we saw power from Conrail, UP, SP, CNW, SOO, CP, BN, BNSF, SF, South Shore and Amtrak, and the "J" has orange, green and ex DM&IR maroon. Meets, overtakings and side by sides, 4 trains at once, this really is a colorful, busy and exciting place. 90 Min HOT6
Hot Spots 8 Daggett CA
Daggett, California is the point that UP's line from Salt Lake City meets BNSF's transcontinental mainline just east of the big yard at Barstow. We taped the trains of BNSF & UP from before dawn to after sunset on a superb March 2000 day. Lots of intermodal, autorack and manifest traffic moving right along, powered by just about everything the two roads own. Our first look at the ugliest diesel in the US, UP's new 6000 hp SD90MAC's. 75 minutes plus previews HOT8

Join us for a Hirail ride as Jake explains the railroad, then check out the trains on the railroad. 60 mins COPR
Marias Pass BNSF
Fall 97 on magnificent Marias Pass, BNSF's mainline through the Rockies. I had some perfect weather and caught lots of the new Heritage C44's, which look terrific against the mountains and fall foliage I started at Shelby and worked through Cut Bank, Browning, Grizzly, Two Medicine Bridge, the snowsheds, Summit, Marias, Java, Essex and on down to Whitefish. I even spent a night at the Izaac Walton to complete the railfan experience of a lifetime. Beautiful fall weather and foliage, stunning mountain scenery, varied and hard working motive power make this an exceptional tape. 2 Hours MARI
NS Beyond Horseshoe
NS on the former Pennsy between Altoona and Conpit Junction. Triple track heavy duty railroading, and a helper district, with sets of SD40-2's doing the honors. There is lots of Conrail blue still around, including an SD80MAC, and former LMS units. There are a number of SD70M's on the property, all with the new style nose, some in primer and some in black, and some in the rapidly disapearing "racoon" or "bandit" scheme. A number of meets, including 2 three train meets. Loads of action. 2 Hours HORS
NS Middle Division
Norfolk Southernís Pennsylvania/Penn Central/Conrail main line, the formerly 4 track ìBroad Wayî. We start at the west end of Enola yard on the former ìIron Bridgeî, then move on to Rockville Bridge, where the main line from Philadelphia joins the Middle Division. We follow the line west to Altoona, with lots of big time NS action, intermodals, manifests, coal trains and Amtrak. Lots of SD70M-2ís and dash 9ís, and some power still in Conrail paint. Narration on/off feature. 90 Min MDLE
NS The Pokey
Taped in the spring of 1997 when the new widecab GE's were out and about in force, both on the point and as helpers. This is coal country, and we caught lots of heavy coal drags twisting through the narrow valleys and bIasting up the grades and through the tunnels that make up this highly scenic route. NS still uses cabooses for back up moves on the mine runs, I was surprised to find them backing up for 15 or 20 miles. Imagine a new C40-9W on one end and a caboose on the other. Also caught a coal train at War Eagle being run around by half a dozen trains. A great show and another of my favorites. 2 Hours POKY
Powder River The Orin Line
Staggering, continuous coal train action on BNSF's Orin line in the Powder River coal basin. UP shares the line, and there is a continous parade of trains. Lots of meets, a couple of side by sides, and 8 (yes, eight) trains in one shot, and even a broken knuckle. Some nice storm light and some nice sunset shots, this is one amazingly busy place. 2 Hours ORIN
Rails Around Mount Shasta
Check out UP's line between Redding, California and Klamath Falls, with lots of BNSF diversion traffic. In addition the big boys, we see California, Oregon & Pacific at Black Butte, and the McCloud River steam excursion. High Tech diesels whining up and down the Sacramento River Canyon and through the Shasta National Forest. 90 Min SHAS
Rails to the Kenai
Ride the Alaska railroad from Anchorage to Seward, with a side trip to Whittier. You'll see the scenery of the Turnagain Arm, glaciers, the longest road (and rail) tunnel in North America, all from the train, moose, and of course the trains in the stunning scenery. At Seward, you'll take a boat ride to see the Kenai Fjords National Park and it's glaciers and wild life, take a plane ride to see brown bear fishing for salmon, and take an up close and personal look at the Exit Glacier. Full musical accompaniment, and narration to tell you the history of the area and the Alaska Railroad. Taped in July, 2004, with the full cooperation of the Alaska Railroad. 90 Min RA01
Stacks and Semaphores
SP's, now UP's Tucumcari line, one of the few places left that you can find any concentration of Style B lower quadrant semaphore signals. I concentrated on the area around Coyote, Carrizozo and Polly, where most of the signals are, catching then going up ano down. This was taken just after the merger, there is not too much sign of UP yet. One of my Favorites. 80 Min STSE
Steam Northeast
Never to be repeated scenes from Edaville during railfan weekend 1991 and Christmas, 1991. Lots of smoky atmosphere, the little Baldwin 2-4-4T's are a delight to see and hear. Next is a 70 ton Climax on the White Mountain Central in the summer of 1991, then we see the Valley RR's Chinese 1647 in excursion service then double headed on railfan day. 60 Min STNE

Tehachapi Cab Ride
Although it starts in a grey day in March, 1998, this is a fascinating ride from Bakersfield to Barstow over Tehachapi Pass. Eight units power the Z NBYWSP-9, BNSF's hottest train, with C40-8W #861 on the point. The view is straight ahead from Caliente to Mojave, but with many roving camera shots, especially around the famous loop. The conductor provides information on the line to a trainee. The video was taped by Roy Knighton, a transportation specialist, who has ridden and taped on the head end of a number of trains. 2 Hrs 17 Min TECR

Bonus feature - ride the ferry over the sea to Skye, and take a scenic tour of this beautiful island. 76 minutes RA03
The West End CSX's Mountain Division
The old B&O West End between Grafton and Keyser, WV. They didn't run much traffic, but what there was was working hard. We caught manifests R316 and R317 and coal trains on their knees on the steep grades of Cheat River, Cranberry, 17 Mile and Newburgh, usually with helpers. Mostly older, 4 axle power with some newer SD50's, few widecabs in evidence. Several varieties of CSX paint, plus Chessie, Family Lines and Seaboard System. 1 hour 45 minutes TWEC
Thunder in the Wasatch
SP action on Soldier Summit, from the Price River Canyon to the Gilluly Loops. Spectacular scenery, with snow covered mountains in the background. This is helper country, we had one set of 5 Rio Grande tunnel motors! Lots of action, from tunnel motors to brand new AC's, 6 trains in 15 minutes at Colton, and multiple trains on Gilluly. This is one awesome place and one tape you won't want to miss. 2 Hours TITW

The former Southern Pacific Sunset Route east of San Bernadino, California. Taped over 2 springs and a summer, there is still lots of SP power around, plus older UP power, though the merger is really starting to show. This is helper country, usually SD45's, sometimes on the head end, sometimes on the rear. The line runs through the orange groves of the scenic San Timeteo Canyon, over Beaumont Summit and down to the desert. Lots of action 2 Hours BEAU
Union Pacific's Salt Lake Route
The inspiration came from Mark Hemphill's superb book. We cover the line from east of Barstow, through the scenic splendors of Afton Canyon, along the access road through the Devil's Playground to Kelso, up Cima Hill, down through the Ivanpah Valley, over Erie Summit and beyond Las Vegas to Meadow Valley Wash. A superb piece of railroad. 2 Hours UPSL
Union Pacific's Triple Track Main HB
Awesome action on the busiest piece of freight railroad in the world, with an average of 125 trains in 24 hours. Loads of SD90/43MAC's and C6044AC's on manifests, coal trains and intermodals, plus CNW and SP power, and run-throughs. UP is working on triple tracking the complete line between North Platte and Gibbon Junction, the trains follow in a constant parade. On the day we actually counted, we saw 85 between 6:30 am and 9:00 pm, this really is big time railroading. This is a tape for motive power fans, exciting and fast paced, with LOTS of meets. Say farewell to famous Buttermilk Curve, it's being straightened and we caught plenty of action there. See aerial views of Bailey Yard, biggest in the world, and some stunning sunset scenes. 2 Hours of intense action TTMN
Winter on the B and A
Another of my favorites. We spent many days plodding up and down the Mass Pike in some nasty weather. We caught the Lake Shore head headlight to headlight with a freight at Charlton, with a stalled snow blower on the passing track. We were on Washington Hill in a two foot blizzard, I'm still surprised we got out but it made for some great shots. Great WInter Action. 120 minutes WOBA
Winter on Kicking Horse Pass
February in the Canadian Rockies, with chest-deep snow, truly stunning scenery and action red SD40-2's. What more could you ask for? We covered CP's transcontinental mainline between Golden BC and Banff AB through the Kicking Horse Valley, the Spiral Tunnels, over Kicking Horse Pass and down to Banff. Power is mostly SD40-2's with some SD40-2F's (red barns) and some leased power. The Rockies are absolutely magnificent and are right in your face, and Morant's Curve has to be one of the most spectacular locations on the continent. This tape recently received the Canadian Rockies Railroad Museum Foundation award for "Outstanding Achievement in Railroad Video" 90 Min KICK
Winter on Marias Pass
Continuing our very popular winter theme, we visited Marias Pass in January, 2002. Heavy snow and 70 m.p.h. winds marked our visit, and BNSF celebrated by dumping a westbound intermodal off the bridge at East Glacier on the Saturday night. We taped some of the cleanup work on Sunday morning, and caught the first train to pass the wreck. Lots of dash 9's in both Heritage schemes, and a number of warbonnets, plus SD40-2's, including some still wearing Cascade Green. Taped between Blackfoot and West Glacier, all the favorite locations including Two Medicine Bridge, Spotted Robe, Bison, False Summit, Marias, Java, and Essex, and the weather goes from sunshine to heavy snow. 1 Hr 45 Min WOMP
Winter on the MRL
Montana Rail Link in February, 1997. We worked our way from Huntley over Bozeman Hill, Winston Hill and Mullan Pass, along the Clark Fork with its semaphores to the famous causeway near Sand Point. We had lots of snow, blowing around in the sunshine on Bozeman, sunshine and heavy snow on Mullan, and got out to the old Milwaukee Trestle at Lombard (what a drive on snow covered dirt roads that was). We caught just about all the power MRL has to offer including F45's, GP9's and a caboose, BN power including the new C44's in Heritage paint, and even an 11 unit lashup in heavy snow. Awesome railroad with older power in the depths of winter. 2 Hours MRLW
Winter on the Moffat Route
Continuing on our very popular winter series, we take a look at the Moffat Route west of Denver through the Colorado Rockies. We see Union Pcific coal trains with distributed power, with former SP and UP AC units, BNSF trackage rights trains, Amtrak, and the Ski train with 3 former Amtrak F40's painted in a Rio Grande like scheme. Taped in January, 2001, we see and hear trains working hard in sunshine and heavy snow in the scenic splendor of the Rocky Mountains. 2 Hours MOFF
Winter on Tennessee Pass
Well it's gone. This really was the last winter for Tennessee Pass and what a pity it had to close. Taped in January 1997 with lots of snow and sunshine and superb scenery. This is one of the best tapes I've done, and getting on for being my best seller, it got good reviews in both "Trains" and "Railfan" magazines. Excellent trip, I only got dragged out of one ditch and had to be towed out of Pando by a wrecker. Seriously though, the scenery is just magnificent, the trains are working hard, and the sight and sound of 4 head end AC's, 4 AC swing helpers and 2 AC's on the rear of a mammoth coal train grinding through the double S-curves at Mitchell is an unforgettable experience. 2 Hours WOTP
