Roseville to Truckee
"Better than The Battle For Donner Pass"- Carl Bradley, former superintendent Roseville Service Unit- Trains Magazine review of Roseville to Truckee "Camera work is right up there with some of the other "big guys" and, in some cases, clearly exceeds the work of the bigger, more established video houses." M. Alley "Great job! Hard to believe Roseville to Truckee was made so early in your existence. Extremely polished, well done, and great fun to watch. I've had a special interest in the Overland Route for years, glad to see someone devoting the attention to it that it richly deserves." - Tim O'Brien "Roseville to Truckee" is a documentary/entertainment video that gives viewers the best seat in the house as they ride with the crew in the cab of an expedited freight train over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Feel the excitement of riding in the engineers seat as we depart Roseville and head East to Truckee.

Steam over Donner
The introduction of steam locomotives revolutionized transportation clear across the North American continent more than a century ago. In the process, it changed our culture and our personal lives forever. It's no wonder that our senses and our emotions are captivated by the enormous size, sound, smell, and visual impressions of these behemoth steam engines. When you feel the heat from the firebox, and you see and hear steam from the boiler; when you smell the oil and grease; when you hear the bell ring and the whistle blow; when you see and hear the smoke stack blasting clouds of smoke skyward; and then, then when you see the massive driver wheels start to turn, when you experience all of these things, you know undeniably that the locomotive is alive. It is breathing and moving and working to pull its assignment to the final destination. Massive and mysterious, these powerful locomotives have captured our senses with their sight and sound and smell. We have built notions of nostalgia around our romance with steam engines. We have written poems and songs and stories about them. The wail of the whistle far off in the night, echoing through mountain canyons excites our psyches with visions of a lonesome train passing in the darkness. Imagine the sounds of enormous locomotives blasting smoke skyward, pounding, clanking, and hissing as they struggle to haul their heavy train over mountain passes, through tunnels and snowsheds. Smell the engine's unmistakable air of steam and oil, feel the heat of the firebox firing your emotions as you listen to that train passing through the night. Now, you can witness all this for yourself. See and hear two famous locomotives climbing over the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California. Experience their massive pulling power like nothing you've ever seen. On May 21, 1999, many hundreds of rail fans pulled their cars to the roadside, stopping anywhere they could find a spot with a view of the passing train.

HD Trains Steam Giants BR
HD Trains contains four Blu-rays, each with its own hour or so long program. Disc One: Steam Giants While this is probably the least picturesque of the four installments on this new release, it contains quite a bit of historical background on what the narrator refers to as "big steam," the behemoths of the steam-powered locomotives that tend to attract the most interest from the public. Here we're introduced to three historic steam engines, the Nickel Plate 765 from Fort Wayne, Indiana, the "Daylight" Southern Pacific 4449 from my hometown of Portland, Oregon, and Parsons, Kansas' Union Pacific 844. The first two lines are seen at a regional Train Festival held in Owosso, Michigan, where scores of train lovers gather to ride the beasts on short excursions of approximately 70 miles round trip to nearby Alma, Michigan and back. While there's frankly not a whole lot to see in this episode, the historical background of the trains is quite interesting, and a number of salient factoids are presented. The Daylight's Art Deco styling is addressed, as well as the fact that the Union Pacific 844 is the last new steam engine delivered to the Union Pacific (in 1944, believe it or not), making this train the only never retired steam powered engine in the United States fleet. Disc Two: Winter Steam in the Rockies This outing is certainly one of the more enchanting from a visual and even aural perspective, as we travel along the Durango and Silverton narrow guage railroad in and around the mountains of Colorado. While we don't get to see any blizzard-like conditions, there's a fair amount of snow as the engine chug-chugs its way through mountain passes and stream-filled valleys, with iconic whistle blows echoing through the peaks. The Durango, Colorado station, which is visited throughout this episode, was actually built as long ago as 1882, and remained in service for a century until 1982.
